Women in technology transforming history and the world.

Emerging technologies

women in computers - women in technology

Women have played a pivotal role in the evolution of technology. Although the industry has historically been dominated by men, many women have contributed significantly to the development of technologies and tools we use today. In this article, we want to exalt some of the most prominent women who have influenced technology and how their innovations have impacted the entire world:

Hedy Lamarr: the actress who became an inventor.

An Austrian actress, she is best known for her role in classic cinema, but what many don’t know is that she was also a prolific inventor. In 1942, together with composer George Antheil, she created a frequency-hopping technology for torpedoes that helped the Allies win World War II. This invention also laid the foundation for modern technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth.

Ada Lovelace: the first programmer

Daughter of the British poet Lord Byron, she is considered the first programmer in history. In the 1840s, she worked with mathematician Charles Babbage to create the “Analytical Engine,” a precursor to modern computers. Lovelace created algorithms for the machine, which earned her the title of the world’s first female programmer.

Grace Hopper: the mother of the COBOL programming language.

She is known as the “mother” of the COBOL programming language. In 1952, she joined a team of engineers working on the Mark II, an electromechanical computer at Harvard University. He developed the first compiler for a high-level programming language, which paved the way for the creation of COBOL. Hopper also coined the term “debugging” to refer to the process of finding and fixing bugs in code.

Radia Perlman: the inventor of the spanning tree protocol.

A network engineer, she is known as the “mother of the Internet” for her work in developing network protocols. In the 1980s, she invented the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), which is a technique used to prevent loops in the network. STP is used today in most Ethernet networks.

Katherine Johnson: NASA’s mathematician.

women transforming history - women in technology - important women in science and technology

She was a mathematician and physicist who worked for NASA for more than three decades. She contributed significantly to the U.S. space race, performing precise calculations that enabled NASA to send astronauts into space and land on the Moon. Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

These women are just a few of the many who have influenced technology and science. Despite the barriers they faced in a male-dominated industry, these women demonstrated extraordinary ability and creativity. Their contributions have had a significant impact on society and have paved the way for women in technology today; today we also find many female role models who continue to revolutionize technology and how to get more out of it.
